Project Description

The Domotherm project, located in the Cappuccini Residential Complex in Trento, Italy, showcases an innovative blend of energy-efficient automation technologies.

Completed in 2023/2024, this project focused on 14 apartments within a complex of 68 units, aiming to enhance the energy efficiency of heating, cooling, and shading systems.

The residential complex, with a total volume of 17,000 cubic meters above ground, leverages geothermal and photovoltaic energy to ensure self-sufficiency, drastically reducing its environmental impact while optimizing comfort for its residents.

The primary goal was to create a smart, sustainable system for energy management, using a hybrid approach that combines KNX and WiFi/MQTT protocols.

The ComfortClick Jigsaw PRO, powered by the bOS software, serves as the central controller, ensuring seamless integration of wired KNX components and wireless devices.

This integration allows for efficient control of heating, cooling, and shading while maintaining energy efficiency.

Key Features

  1. Dynamic Heating and Cooling Control:
The KNX-based controller for the floor heating system employs a dual-loop PID mechanism to dynamically regulate water temperature in real-time, optimizing both comfort and energy use.
  2. Shading and Climate Integration:
KNX thermo-hygrostats not only control temperature and humidity but also manage roller shutters and sunshades, reducing solar heat gain in summer and enhancing insulation in winter.
  3. Advanced HVAC Protection Mode:
The HVAC "Protection" mode, managed by ComfortClick's bOS, is activated when windows or doors are open to prevent energy waste. This mode differentiates between fully opened windows and tilted ones, applying different settings accordingly.
  4. Humidity Control:
The bOS system monitors and adjusts humidity across different rooms using a weighted average, factoring in the Humidex metric for optimal comfort.
  5. Smart Automation via WiFi/MQTT:
Shelly devices provide wireless control for roller shutters, sunshades, and window/door sensors, these devices communicate with the KNX system through MQTT, allowing for flexible automation and enhanced energy efficiency.

Additionally, the project benefited from the Italian Superbonus 110% tax incentives, with plans underway to expand the smart automation system to 20 more apartments in 2025.

The system’s flexibility, energy efficiency, and intuitive user control via ComfortClick’s platform make it a model for sustainable residential automation.
